Tour Moray, Maras and Salineras enables you to explore the ancient archeological complex of Moray and the surrounding area. Enjoy this wonderful adventure and the incredible scenery of the Sacred Valley with a friendly local guide. Beautiful snowcapped Chicon Mountain and Veronica Mountain of the Cordillera Vilcanota form the backdrop for our Maras Moray Tour. Moray is one of the most enigmatic sites in Peru. The concentric ring terraces of Moray are unlike anything else left behind by the Incas. Three main sets of rings are carved deep into the earth forming sculpted Inca terraces thought to have served as an agricultural laboratory, where the Incas tested experimental crops and conditions.
Next stop on our Maras and Moray Tour will be the colonial town of Maras, where the Incan nobility relocated after the Spanish Conquest of Cusco. There are fascinating Incan coats-of-arms that are still visible on the lintels of the front doors of the houses. Finally, you’ll explore the ancient Salt Mines of Salineras. These mines are made up of holes with an average size area of about 5 square meters. These holes are filled with water and the evaporation of the water enables the salt to be harvested. 5000 of these wells have been excavated on the hillsides of the Sacred Valley. Join us on our Half Day Tour to Maras Moray and the Salt Flats from Cusco and take wonderful photos, learn about Incan agricultural techniques, and have fun! This Maras Salt Mines Tour is highly recommended for photography lovers because of the impressive landscape that surrounds you in Chinchero, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo. The Maras and Moray Tour is also perfect for hikers and mountain bikers, since there is a trail that connects the salt mines with the old Andean villages in the Sacred Valley.

Itinerary

Day 1:
Tour of Moray, Maras and Salineras
If you are one of those travelers who loves to explore and to experience unique adventures, this Moray Tour is definitely the alternative that you have been looking for. During your stay in the City of Cusco we recommend that you take advantage of every opportunity to explore Cusco and the authentic Heart of the Inca Empire. You will leave Cusco around 8:00 am. The first place that you will visit will be the house of the weavers’ association in Chinchero. Here the local weavers will show you the most exquisite weavings in all of South America. Next, you will travel to the ancient and important Incan agricultural testing station of Moray. Here they built great circular terraces where the temperature changed depending on the altitude. As you descend the terraces, the temperature increases. Incas had extraordinary knowledge of climates and microclimates. Plants from all over their Empire were brought here to be adapted so that they would grow at different elevations. After Moray you will go visit the traditional town of Maras. These houses of Maras feature the coats-of-arms of Incan nobles who lived here during Incan and colonial times. Today Maras is a very traditional town. Finally, you will explore the Salt Mines of Salineras. This is a photogenic site consisting of over 5000 small wells where salt is collected. Some of these wells are very old. Incas mined salt at this site, and this practice continued throughout the reign of the Spanish viceroys. These days local people let the salt water flow into the depressions which they have dug out. The sun then evaporates the water, leaving behind a residue of salt which is then collected and sold on the local market. You will finish up the Maras Moray Tour by returning to Cusco in the afternoon
